I discovered this on accident, in an attempt to make tiny filled doughnuts. They are closer to a pita bread, and great for dipping!
These can be made sweet or salty, depending on the finish.
Fresh Fried Bread
Mix together:
- 2 cups flour
- Pinch salt
- 1t baking powder
- 1 packet instant dry yeast
- 1 T sugar
- 1 cup warm water
Roll on floured surface (for easy clean up, place plastic wrap down before rolling). Using a glass, cut rolled dough into circles.
Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable shortening in a frying pan. Gently place dough into heated oil, being careful not to crowd pan. Flip when the edges begin to turn golden brown, 45-60 seconds.
Drain bread onto paper towel, and toss with your choice of seasonings- we like powered sugar for sweet, served with fruit preserves, or penzey’s buttermilk ranch dressing base for the savory bread!
